Telescopic Handler

Format: 3 days
No of Participants: Up to 4
Certification: FAS CSCS logbook/ticket and FETAC certificate
Objective
To ensure that all participants are trained in the safe operation of a telescopic handler in keeping with health and safety regulations. Background

A telescopic handler is also known as a multi-tool carrier or a variable reach truck. It has a boom section that can be extended by telescopic means. The end of the boom can be fitted with a range of attachments including: | Crane Jib
| | Loader Bucket
| | Forks
| | Wood grab |
Some telescopic handlers are designed for rough terrain while others aren't. The operational characteristics are different. Operators must be trained to know the differences to operate the machinery safely in different environments. Operators must also be trained in the non-slewing and slewing machines.
Certification and Training covers:

| Attachment Fitted | Certificate Required | Training Required | | When non-slewing and fitted with a jib or used as a crane with a rated capacity of 3 tonnes or less | No certificate of competency is specificed by legisation | Operators must be trained and instructed in the safe use of the plant and in the relevant competencies for non-slewing mobile crane | | When non-slweing and fitted with a jib or used as a crane with a rated capacity of 3 tonnes or more | Operators must hold a non-slewing mobile crane certificate of competency (code CN). | Operators must be trained and instructed in the safe use of the plant and non-slweing mobile cranes | | When slewing and fitted with a jib or used as a crane of any capacity | Operators must hold a non-slewing mobile crane certificate of competency for the appropriate rated capacity. (For example, a C2 certificate allows for a rated capacity of up to 20t | Operators must be trained and instructed in the safe use of the plant and slewing mobile cranes. | | When fitted with forks and similar attachment | No particular certificate of competency is specified legislation | Operators must be trained and instructed in the safe use of the plant. This training must incorporate elements appropriate to forklift truck operations. | | When fitted with a loader bucket | No particular certificate of competency is specified by legislation | Operators must be trained and instructed in the safe use of the plant. Training must incorporate elements appropriate to front end loader. |
 Course includes:

Theory | Duties of operator
| | Pre-Shift Inspection
| | Hazards associated when working with a Telescopic Handler |
Practical | Inspection of machine before use
| | The effect of size, load, weight, gradients and ground conditions transportation of materials
| | Risk Assessment in working environment
| | Recognition of approved hand signals |
On the 3rd day of the course participants are given a log book. After 6 months further experience under the supervision of a CSCS ticket holder of the same category, they must pass a 1 day assessment to achieve CSCS card and FETAC Certification
Participants must bring the following on the day of training:
1. Passport Photo
2. Current Safe Pass is Advisable
3. Personal Protective Equipment
4. Evidence or Proof of experience (Over six months) i.e. Letter from employer
Participants must be aged 18 years or over
